Directors Statement:

I know when to be creative and when to be fast.

Fiction Projects:

I've taken the time to learn how to talk to the crew, the production team, and most importantly the actors. I am a thorough technical director, and a communicative actor's director. I work with the actors to focus their decisions, and create blocking that is organic, creative, and shootable. I tailor my direction for each actor, but we regularly come back to concepts I've learned in Michael Shurtleff's book, Audition. ( "moments before", "describing the goal", and beat specific discussion). I am a believer in table reads (when time permits), and meeting before the shoot day to discuss the nuances of each character and (when time permits) rehearsals. When we do all the prep work we can inject those nuances into the scenes, while still being technically prepared on shoot days.

I like working with scriptwriters and take an active hand in creating a dialogue between them and myself. I like giving script notes. I feel that it's my job to take their vision to the next level and bring life to their story. I try to involve them through out the process and always invite them to my sets. If things need reinventing onset or improvisations with actors lead to new conclusions, the writer is the first person I turn to.

I use lookbooks, storyboarding, shotlists, and overhead maps to streamline the creative process. I often use the program FrameForge to assist in this process. I feel that it saves the production time and money. I use these tools as a dialogue starter with the DP, Production Designer, and other members of the creative team.

I also use these tools as a way to describe the productions needs to each department. As a continued point, I am proactive with every department, by creating thorough info/lists. My efforts clue each department head in on what needs to happen so that our days can be successful. I set a tone about being thorough, kind, and creatively inclusive that resonates throughout the production. I honestly get more out of people because of these efforts.

Also, I have access to crew, cast, and equipment. Often, without stepping on the Producers toes, I find myself helping to fill in gaps with members of my regular team.

Non-Fiction Projects:

I feel that it's my job to make decisions, and give definition to the project. I work hard on non-fiction shoots to get to the heart of what we are trying to say. I find an honest, but interesting way to get our point across.

I like interviews. I an excited by asking questions and simply learning! I think the viewer wants to understand the situations presented to them. I look for the human element within each moment I find.
